Hello, once again. As I already mentioned in my previous post, I was away for a couple of reasons the last two months. However, seeing how I failed to make usage of my passion for One Piece and any other manga the last two months, I decided to write a second post today. This time, we are going to cover the main subject of One Piece during my absence and that is nothing else but the “execution of Shimotsuki Yasuie, the former Daimyo of Hakumai”.
Yasuie, also known as Tonoyasu and Yasu, is the father of Toko. He was introduced in the second act of Wano, when he found Zoro, who was lost at that time, and started following him.
While the first chapters of his introduction showed him as a minor character, he turned into a very important character of the arc and his mini-arc in Act 2 is one of the most important parts of the Wano arc thus far.

Since his introduction, Yasu was presented as a good guy, who was willing to help everybody. He always smiled and always helped people. When the Pirate-Mink-Samurai alliance started spreading the word of the return of Kozuki family, Yasu appeared at Kanjuro, informing him that he would also help.
At that time, Kanjuro couldn’t realize who he was due to the fact that he changed a lot during the 20 years of his absence.
20 years ago, Yasu was a strict man, who rarely smiled. When Orochi took charge of Wano, Yasu preferred to not bow at the man who killed his friend, Oden. He would eventually be chased and considered dead, while he actually changed his name to Tonoyasu, assisting those who needed help.

At time of Wano arc, he had become a shadow of his former self. He was poor, he had little to no money, he always smiled and he was not the strict man he once used to be.
True to his words, Yasu really helped the alliance. The next day after he informed Kanjuro, he was arrested by Orochi’s men. While pretending to be the Witching Hour Boy (Ushimitsu Kozo), Yasu was arrested and his identity was revealed. This action would misguide Orochi, who would take his time to publicly execute him, making him an example for any rebellious citizens.
This turn of events would help Kin’emon’s plan in multiple ways. /The first four have to do with Yasu’s reasons of surrendering himself, while the rest are the results of his actions.

While the action was great at these chapters and the artwork was fantastic, I must say that I am not deeply satisfied with this turn of events. I understand that Wano is a huge arc which has been planned for years. As a result, it has to move on so a few things and reveals can happen quickly. However,
Yasu’s execution is a very important part of the Wano arc, while Yasu doesn’t feel important with his character building . He is important to the story because the writer revealed him as an important character.
. He was suddenly revealed as the leader of Wano’s Yakuza and turned from a frail old man to a badass character and Luffy’s mentor in Udon.

However, it should be noted that Hyogoro was sentenced in the very same prison Luffy was. So in the reader’s mind, yes, that character had the potential to be important. Had he not been the leader of the Yakuza in the past, he would have no reason to be in the same prison as Luffy.
On the other hand, we got Yasuie, who is also an important figure. While he is as humble as he was during the time he served as a Daimyo, his role in the story until the chapters of his execution, didn’t give me the vibes of his importance. To be fair, no matter how badass Yasu is presented in the flashbacks, he will always be the character who was introduced 15 chapters prior to the chapter of his execution . And he didn’t even appear in all these 15 chapters.
Nonetheless, I understand that Oda has thousands of ideas and plans for this arc. As a result, a few things have to happen quickly, just like Yasuie’s execution. Writing an epic arc like Wano is a very hard task, so while I may find a few things wrong, I would never be as good as Oda in the first place. And despite the few things I find wrong in the arc (such as Yasuie’s character arc), this doesn’t prevent the Wano arc from looking like a masterpiece in my eyes.also known as Yasu the Hedgehog, Tonoyasu, or just Yasu (ヤス , Yasu ? ), was a member of the Shimotsuki Family, and a taikomochi who lived in Ebisu Town near the capital of Wano Country.

Twenty years after Kurozumi Orochi's takeover of Wano, Yasuie sacrificed himself in an effort to mislead the shogun's forces and enable Kozuki Momonosuke's revolution to continue.
Yasuie was a thin short man with a thick spherical head. He had tiny blush marks on his cheeks, stubble around his mouth, and a thin mustache on his upper lip.
His epithet came from how his thick blue afro spiked out like hedgehog spines. Kanjuro and Shinobu did not recognize him until they saw it.

As Tonoyasu, his hair was covered by a bandana with purple polka-dots and tied in a top knot. He wore an orange kimono with stitched patches and waraji sandals.

Yasuie was always shown smiling. He was very easily excited, as he gushed over Zoro's accomplishments and showered the swordsman with compliments. He could also be self-deprecating, as he did not object when Zoro accidentally referred to him as Kasu (trash) instead of Yasu.
Although he might act like a clown most of the time...he has been loved by everyone in this town for a long time now. He is our Buddha.
Though eccentric, carefree, and fun loving, Yasuie was extremely kind and compassionate, using the money his daughter earned to support the citizens of Ebisu Town, providing provisions to those who are too sick and injured even if it means starving himself. He enjoyed helping people, even those as amoral as Bingo, Bongo, and Bungo. His friendly and compassionate personality gave him a strong charisma, as when he joined the conversation with Kanjuro and Shinobu about the rebellion, neither of them brought up the fact that they did not know who he was.

According to Shinobu, he was a strict man in the past, but lost much of that attitude over the last 20 years.
He took his position as daimyo extremely seriously, especially when it came to protecting the Habu Port. In much of the same way, he expected Kozuki Oden to devote his time proving himself as Sukiyaki's heir.
He was also extremely generous as not only did he gave away all the money to most of the future Nine Red Scabbards tried to steal, he also gave them extra money to them and encouraged them to buy books to educate themselves for the sake of supporting Oden.

He was also perceptive as he did not quickly believe Orochi's claim that Oden stole money from him, knowing that Oden was not the kind of person who would hide his misdeeds.
Yasuie was proud of his deeds as Tonoyasu. With his last breath, he declared to die not as a daimyo of the Kozuki Family but as a fun-loving jester of Ebisu Town.
When Toko accidentally ate a Smile Fruit, Yasuie chose to have some as well so that Toko wouldn't suffer alone. Although the two were separated after Toko was sold off to work in the Flower Capital, they maintained a close bond, with Toko giving Yasuie her earnings from her work.
