Due to my clear negligence of writing any reviews for a very long time, I would say that I’m doing a rather good job of actually committing right now. I thought that I would take a little break from the whole Marvels scene and actually write about an anime. How long has it been since I did one of those aye?
For the past week I have been re-watching the anime: Yumeiro Patissiere. Why? I have absolutely no idea but now I’ve found it to be rather inspirational. Strange, I know, for me to find inspiration -of all places- in a cooking anime. But this anime is definitely more than just a cooking anime, it really instils the importance of establishing a goal and working hard towards reaching that dream. Not to mention it constantly brings up the fact that you should never give up, no matter what.
Of course, the main bulk of this anime is centred around Amano Ichigo and her dream of becoming a patissiere despite her very apparent lack of skill for doing anything other than eating. However, it is later discovered that she has an incredible palate not to mention an excellent sense of smell. Also, we can’t forget about the ‘Sweets Princes’ – yeah, I still cringe a little. It’s really incredible, have you seen Hanabusa’s candy-making skills? Of course, many of the candy sculptures that they make in the film are clearly impossible in real life, but let’s not deprive the anime of its magical feel; because really, that chocolate dress would’ve totally melted and cracked when she moved. You can’t be that skilled man, even Heston is unable to accomplish such an incredible feat.
Yumeiro Patissiere: All Episodes
Yes. That is supposedly a dress made by a bunch of 14-year-olds. And it is surprisingly doing a bang-up job of not melting everywhere. Isn’t chocolate supposed to be hard- it really makes you wonder how she got into that dress, doesn’t it?
I know that a lot of people who have watched this series have categorised this anime as being a ‘children’s anime’ but it really shouldn’t be reserved for children only. In fact, it consists of many scenes which I really consider to be inappropriate for children under the age of thirteen. Really, I’m being honest here, even now as a eighteen year old, I feel slightly embarrassed when watching some of these scenes. Don’t even get me started on Koshiro’s stalking tendencies.
Now, I’m not saying that it’s inappropriate for little kids, though there was that whole naked Hanabusa singing and shooting roses out of his hands scene, but that’s not the point. The point is, this anime deals with some rather mature issues, like there was that whole scene with Hanabusa’s father being killed in a car accident and Andou dealing with his difference to other students in terms of social status. There are some pretty mature issues being highlighted here and children can’t comprehend half of the things going on. Proceed!
Yumeiro Pâtissière Sp Professional (tv)
Yumeiro Patissiere is split up into two series- Yumeiro Patissiere and Yumeiro Patissiere Professional. Now I’m not going to lie, sure I stuck around with this anime due to the great food shots and it was definitely captivating watching them create such magnificent-looking desserts but that little thing going on between Kashino and Amano is what really made me all fluttery inside while watching the series. I’m pretty sure I was only thirteen when I started watching this series (Gosh, it’s been five years since then. You can imagine how old I feel right now.) and so that was around a year after I had just finished watching Kaichou wa Maid Sama. And yes, if your ears have not already informed you, Kashino’s voice actor is the same guy that voiced Usui Takumi. Now you know that I have a very deep connection with this seiyuu and he’s just one of those seiyuus that I can just instantly recognise when I hear them. So yes, I had a very very tiny crush on Kashino throughout the series.
I really enjoyed how this anime dropped tiny little hints throughout the first series, highlighting Kashino’s feelings towards Ichigo. The subtleness of it all just makes you smile while still keeping everything PG – you know for the kids that should really be watching something more age appropriate. Like I get that there are little sweet spirits (fairies essentially) flying around everywhere but I just feel like this ‘cooking theme’ is better catered towards a more mature audience, you know? Children under the age of ten should just stick to Digimon and Pokemon and maybe a little Dragon Ball Z. (Live while you can before you reach the boring age where the idea of cooking actually excites you.)
Don’t get me wrong though, after watching this series you really feel like being a patissiere is your calling. It’s like after I read the manga ‘Kitchen Princess’ I felt like cooking and opening up my own restaurant or after reading ‘Beauty Pop’ I instantly felt like cutting other people’s hair; it’s just one of those series that really inspire to do something that might not particularly be the right career choice for you. For me, they should just create a journalism or publishing anime right now because I would definitely watch that and enjoy every single moment of it. But we’re getting side-tracked.
Uta No Prince Sama/yumiero Pâttisière/fushigi Yuugi
Back to the whole idea of this being a ‘children’s anime’, many people compared this anime to Shugo Chara – which I did watch when I was ten (and yes, I did develop a major soft spot for Ikuto- despite our 7 year age gap at the time- and to think that I’m now older than 17-year-old Ikuto; well we’re kind of the same age now since I’ll only be turning 18 in September. But by golly gosh am I getting old.) But we are all forgetting that Shugo Chara really should not be an anime series that is anywhere visibly accessible to children. Are you forgetting that this is an anime that contains an 11-year-old prancing around with a 17-year-old. That is paedophilia and we are allowing children to watch this and to think that it’s okay for a grade-schooler to run around with a high-schooler who gets high on catnip. Is that really okay? Does that in anyway sound appropriate to you? Cause I definitely know that I will not be allowing my children to get this kind of message from a cartoon program.
Not to forget the clearly sexually confused cross-dresser (more appropriately referred to as the potential transgender ) and the very inappropriate incest which we just brushed off our shoulders. She’s what 15/16 and he’s 17, they are siblings by-blood and somehow in her pretty blonde head she thinks that it is appropriate to make-out with her brother in front of 11-year-olds! Come on! I know that he’s very attractive-looking but honestly, the producers thought that it was okay to write this into the script while being fully aware that they were airing this anime in the morning kids’ cartoon section. Well-done Japan, well done. [Seriously, don’t even get me started on the whole lock and key thing..]
Yes, this is the scene where Ikuto attempts to put his key in her lock. This is pedophilia. I don’t care how old she looks, she’s barely hit puberty and he’s on his way to reaching the drinking age limit. It’s pedophilia and this is frowned upon by society. Yet, it’s perfectly fine to showcase this behaviour in a children’s anime.

Of course, there is that whole idea that each child is born into the world with an egg and that that egg holds their dream of who they want to be in the future. But it really is frightening that there are also over-aged men who go around hypnotising high school students into destroying those eggs thus destroying the futures of many innocent children, exiling them into a future of depression and hopelessness. I’m pretty sure that toddlers should not be exposed to the harsh and sadistic nature of society at such a young age, what the heck happened to Hamtaro? Honestly people.
But we’re not here to discuss the very inappropriate anime series that is known as Shugo Chara but the less warped and honestly much preferred Yumeiro Patissiere. (And that is why, Yumeiro Patissiere should never be compared to the the very sinful Shugo Chara.) Moving on. (Because we can totally discuss this Shugo Chara issue in another review- if I ever do end up doing a review of Shugo Chara)
This anime series was incredible because it really inspires you to give things your best despite how hopeless you think you are. Because besides the whole cooking part of things, Kashino wants to pursue the career of being a patissiere despite his family wishes of him becoming a doctor and so he has to struggle with his dream and the expectations of those around him. Not to mention he has to overcome this by constantly working hard and achieving the
