Sakuragi.
Slamdunk is a golden example on how you introduce an excellent manga series. While balancing humor, story and basketball, Takehiko Inoue I believe perfectly executed two things that make his sports manga series stand out: first is characterization and the other, panel study. Inoue nailed it in introducing (most of) the main characters as colorful as possible in the most efficient way, giving them personalities that are highly likeable despite their quirks and imperfections. Central to that of course is our red-headed protagonist Sakuragi, who is way more annoying, dedicated and hilarious than the one we have seen in the anime! Inoue made sure that Sakuragi and basketball will always be the central point in the series. The panels are carefully constructed. They are funny when things are supposed to be goofy and awe-inspiringly serious when the plot needs to.
Growing up, Takehiko Inoue's Slam Dunk was an anime that has truly captured my imagination. Primarily because it features a basketball playing protagonist and the sport is entwined into the socio-cultural fabric of Philippine society. I frequently saw myself as Hanamichi Sakuragi, especially the way he bumbled around learning to play the sport. The source material, the manga has the more complete story as the animated series covered only around two-thirds of it. We may never know the reason why such creative decision was made. This only made the 31-volume series required reading for the Slam Dunk fan. I recently started on rereading the entire series again and this time, I'll be documenting my progress here on . The first volume is as funny as I remembered it. It has always been a gut-busting laugh every time I read it.
Tomo 31 Manga Deportivo Baloncesto Slam Dunk De Segunda Mano Por 7 Eur En León En Wallapop
The rating is for the first volume. The review is for the whole series. This manga is (arguably) the most popular basketball sport manga. Even after more than a decade, I haven't found a better sport manga for the art or for keeping thrilling matches (especially THE final match of the manga). I don't know what manga that started it, but it is popular to start a sport manga by telling juvenile delinquent theme for multi volumes before switching into sport theme. Slam Dunk used this approach too. I personally don't like this approach, that's why I gave 3 star for first volume. And there is the mandatory silly jokes by silly characters at the beginning. After endure the delinquent theme, the sport theme of this manga is still one of the best! Even with the formulaic matches (I believe many of the sport manga fans can predict which games the protagonist team will lost), the thrilling is still working for me. The final match of the manga is the best so far that I've read. I was trembling at three of the scenes (Once is when opponent coach instructed the strongest Japan's High School defensive player to guard the main protagonist, who had just trained basketball for three months. I kept the other two for you to find out) . But if I see the sport plot, I saw flaws. For examples: There is an opponent that introduced but then unused for the main story; in another extreme, there was not enough background for some tough opponents. In conclusion, I recommend this sport manga. This is one of the classic in sport manga.
This book has so much personality. The main character is so expressive and so sincere in his feelings. On top of that, the facial expressions that the artist draws are so hilarious. I laughed out loud several times just from the art itself.
I remember watching Slam Dunk’s anime back in 2019 and was throughly enjoyed it. Of course others down the years talking about the series, literally spoiled the rest for me to read it all. At least I managed to read it all in one go this time than “Vagabond” which was one I never read before by Inoue-sensei. As a non basketball fan, you still would root for the character Hanamichi to win every basketball game he partakes and woo the girl of his dreams. Character development was good like Rukawa was a interesting sort for being a cold oddball but attractive guy that you want to get to know more! However although it seems like a simple story, he has come far so much from being a delinquent to a talented basketball player. This is definitely considered one of the most decent sports manga series out there for any sports or even non-sports fan out there like yours truly, to binge read. It’s long and old skool but it really captures the way how basketball works in general!
Ep82: Slam Dunk
Hilarious! I’m such a sucker for sports anime/manga. Sakuragi and his gang reminded me of Josuke and Okayasu from Jojo part 4 and those iconic meme worthy facial expressions - of One Piece. Definitely going to continue with this series.
Slam Dunk popularised basketball not only in Japan but it spread through entire Asia. It pioneered new visual and narrative techniques in the genre of sports manga. A truly legendary manga. I've never watched the anime or whatsoever. Enjoyed the first volume a lot. Interesting and very funny.
Having next to zero knowledge about basketball, I didn't expect this manga to intrigue me so. Providing not only shonen humor, amazing characters, vibrant artwork, but also knowledge of basketball as the story progresses, Takehiko Inoue's Slam Dunk is a milestone in sports manga.
Slam Dunk 15
Oh, this brought back some sweet memories. I enjoyed every single moment of reading this manga. I also had a much needed laughter. So excited to read the remaining volumes 😁
This..I have to say is an ABSOLUTE PURE CLASSIC for Manga/Comic. Even if you're not a fan of basketball or any sort of sports, this is not to be missed. It begins with a red-haired super tall freshman delinquent, Sakuragi Hanamichi who happens to been rejected by 50 girls. Seriously 50?? That's a record! LOL Anyway, he was madly head over heels when he met Akagi Haruko. Haruko was so taken by Sakuragi's physique and thought that he could be the saviour for the School's Basketball team (her older brother, is the captain). Thinking that she's the one, Sakuragi agrees to join the basketball team in order to win her heart. But there's a problem...... Sakuragi knows nothing about basketball!! He only knows how to fight! But his determination to learn (boy he is a super fast learner..but hey, this is a manga. Anything is possible) took everyone by surprise. It's all thanks a freshman Ace, Rukawa Kaede. You see Sakuragi hates Rukawa all because his angel, Haruko is madly in love with him...(note that Rukawa doesn't even care about others but basketball). This also lead to constant bickering between the two sportmen and it never gets old! Surprise cos I'd usually would get sick after a while. Along the whole series (I think it was 31 vols all together and I owned the whole series along with 4 side complementing manga based on a short movie anime of it - (I owned the Malay edition version btw). In this manga, we get to learn the ups and downs to be the best of the best in sports (basketball in this case) as well as some painful life journey by a certain former Ace and how he bounce back. Growth by the rest of the characters and of course, crazy humour/antiques thanks to the red-haired Sakuragi himself! Although physical characteristic of the characters are so over the top...A red-haired Japanese? (OK maybe he dyed his). But a basketball captain who looks like an African descend (even his skin tone gives that off) while his sister is adorably passable Japanese? (He could be adopted..no?) OK who cares?... This is a top notch! I've never enjoyed this series as much as other mangas I've came across. It always brings laughter to me whenever I'm down. Not to mention, this is shonen genre which is targeted to boys and I'm a girl! OK, maybe One Piece came a close second. So go, READ IT!
[Note: this is a review of the entire Slam Dunk series, not just the first volume.] Slam Dunk is an unparalleled expression of the shounen manga that captures the hearts of readers in a way no other shounen manga before it has done and none after it
