Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. For every step, sketch lightly at first so that it’s easy to erase if you make a mistake.
How To Draw Anime & Manga Faces & Heads In Profile Side View
Step 1: Draw a big circle as a guide for the top of the manga boy’s head. To draw the circle, first make four marks to determine the height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. Space out the marks evenly at the beginning. The farther apart the marks are, the bigger the circle will be. Sketch lightly at first so that it’s easy to erase if you make a mistake. If you’re struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a circular object like a bowl or a lid.
Step 2: Below the circle, draw an angled line as a guide for the lower part of the boy’s head. Pay attention to the length of this guide. The lines on the sides are basically vertical but they slope inward a bit. The bottom is made up of a line similar to a wide letter V. This entire line is a guide for the jaw and chin.
Step 3: Half way between the top and bottom of the head, draw a long horizontal line as a construction guide that will help you place the boy’s facial features later. The sides of this line should end where the circle meets the jaw.

Draw a long vertical line across the entire head for another construction guide. Place this line directly in the middle of the entire shape too.
Step 4: On each side of the head, draw curved lines as guides for the ears. Place the ears directly below the horizontal construction line that’s inside the head.
Step 6: Inside the head, directly under the horizontal construction line, draw two thick curved lines for the top part of the eyes. Place the eyes on either side of the vertical construction line. The eyes should fit in the area between the horizontal construction line and the bottom edge of the first circle. The lower edges of the eyes should curve inward close to the lower edge of the first circle. Make the inner tips of the eyes thin.

Step 7: Inside each eye, draw a small oval for the boy’s irises. The top parts of the ovals should hide behind the eyelashes. Inside each iris, draw an even smaller oval and shade them in for the pupils. Place the pupils directly in the center of the irises.
Step 8: On the edge of each iris, draw a two tiny circles for highlights. On each iris, there should be a circle near the top and another circle near the bottom. Draw the circles directly over the edges of the irises. Above each eye, directly on top of the horizontal construction line, draw a cuved horizontal line for the folds of the eyelids.
Step 9: Higher above the eyes, draw two long, horizontal lines for the eyebrows. The inner tips of the eyebrows should be thick and they should slope down a bit. The outer tip of the eyebrows should be thinner. Use the vertical construction line as a guide to help you space out the eyebrows. Add a few tiny, spike-like shapes on the inner tips of the eyebrows to make them bushier.

Step 10: Directly below the original first circle and slightly to the left of the vertical construction line, draw a very short, angular line for the nose. To the left of the nose, draw an even shorter line for to side of the nose. To the right, draw a tiny line for the nostril. Halfway between the bottom edge of the original circle and the chin, draw a short, horizontal line for the mouth.
Step 11: Darken the curved lines on the sides of the head for the ears. Inside each ear, draw a series of curved shapes for the inner ear structure. These lines don’t have to be perfect, just draw some short curved lines for detail. You can also draw fewer lines and it would still look okay.
Step 12: Darken the outer edges of the first two guides to create the shape of the head. Leave a gap on the sides of the head to accentuate where the ears connect to the head. As you darken the lines on the bottom, make the shapes curvier for a smoother jaw and chin. Darken the lines under the head for the neck.

Final Step: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don’t worry about erasing all of the guides. It’s okay to leave some behind. Erase the bit of the irises that are inside the tiny highlight circles. The highlight circles should be blank inside. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.

Manga and anime male characters of this age tend to have larger chins and longer faces with smaller/narrower eyes when compared to their female counterparts or younger males. Though this can also vary based on style.
If you are going to be following the tutorial with pencil and paper be sure to draw light lines until you are done with the facial feature and hair placement steps. You will need to erase parts of the drawing afterwards.
Make the top part of the head close to a circle and from there project two lines angled inwards towards the middle of the face followed by a set of curves and two more angled lines pointing further inwards. Join the two sets of lines at the chin. Draw the chin itself with a small curve but don’t make it too pointy or the character will look less masculine.

Make a small bump around the eyebrow areas followed by an indent that transitions into the nose area. You can see step four of this tutorial for positioning the nose. But do your best to estimate it’s placement at this point.
Also at this stage you can simply draw a straight line from the tip of the nose to the bottom of the chin.
Add the bottom of the jaw by projecting a line form slightly above the oval and then curving it into another line that basically transitions into the chin.
How To Draw An Anime Head And Face In Side View
To position the ears draw a vertical line through the middle of the head and another line between that and the chin. Draw the ears with their top and bottom between the two lines.
You can see the inner details of the ears above but you may want to save drawing these for after you place the rest of the facial features.
The bigger and wider you draw the eyes the younger your character will look. In this case the character is a young adult (or close) so the eyes will be smaller then those of a boy.

Draw the eyes with their top portion touching the horizontal halfway point through the face (use the line from the previous step) and leave enough space between them to fit another eye.
Please note that the eyes will only be positioned this way when in their natural state if they are open wider they can go past this line and if shut they will usually go below the line. For now you can simply draw the their basic outline. The details will be added in a later step.
Draw the eyebrows slightly above the eyes. Anime and manga male eyebrows are often drawn thicker then female ones especially in older characters. But it also depends on the style.

Place the details of the nose so that its bottom would be at the halfway point/line between the top of the eyes and the bottom of the chin. Please note that the actual bottom of the nose will not be draw. Show the nose by drawing a small vertical line for the bridge and giving a hint of one of the nostrils (slightly above the placement line).
If you are drawing the side view of the nose you will want to draw the bottom of the nose and the mouth at the same time as they basically transition into one another.
