!’s story revolves around five Japanese high school girls who join Sakuragaoka High School's Light Music Club. The manga follows the daily lives of each member and shows their interactions with each other, their teachers, friends and families.
At first, despite being successful in saving the club from being disbanded, each member brings in her own sorts of problems to prevent a strict and structured training. The guitarist Yui Hirasawa has no experience in playing musical instruments or reading sheet music and usually forgets already managed progresses, be it in her musical or academic career. Drummer Ritsu Tainaka often forgets to play her role as the club's president and usually rushes at the drums, bassist Mio Akiyama is, in contrast to her mature nature, a shy scaredy-cat with immense stage fright and keyboardist Tsumugi Kotobuki has, as the overprotected daughter of an unimaginable rich and influential family, no real idea of normal social situations. At the beginning of their second year of high school, a fifth member joins the club, an underclassmen named Azusa Nakano who also plays guitar and usually struggles with the irresponsibility and carelessness of the other members.
During their shared school career, all of them eventually manage to handle their problems together, making the light music club a more or less serious club bit by bit. Every day, the club gathers together to drink tea and eat snacks in the clubroom which quickly became the club's trade mark and finally lead to the band's name, Ho-Kago Tea Time (Afterschool Tea Time).

At the end of Volume 4, the original members graduate from high school and leave Azusa behind who refounds the light music club with Yui's sister Ui Hirasawa and their friend Jun Suzuki. The club quickly welcomes a new member, Tsumugi's childhood friend Sumire Saitō, who has a low self-esteem and plays drums. Shortly afterwards, Nao Okuda, a girl from Sumire's class with absolutely no talent to play any instrument joins the club and takes the role of the musical composer, using her laptop. The newly formed club takes the name Wakaba Girls, meaning Fresh Leaf Girls, since every member aside from Azusa is a freshman in the light music club, and only three members already have made musical experiences.
Running parallel, the original members all attend J. Women's University, starting their collegiate career. They once again join a light music club, where they instantly start a friendly rivalry with the band Onna Gumi, consisting of the bassist Sachi Hayashi, who has a serious issue with her height, the drummer Ayame Yoshida, who is very similar in character to Ritsu and the guitarist Akira Wada, who mostly acts tough and plays the role of a counterpart of Yui.

Starting her high school career, Mio decides to join her school's Literature Club until she is stopped by her childhood friend, Ritsu, who wants to join the Light Music Club. Mio's objection is quickly rejected by Ritsu who simply rips the club application form in half before she drags her to the faculty office. Arrived there, they are informed by the music teacher Ms. Sawako Yamanaka that the club has no members left and becomes dissolved unless at least four students join by the end of the month.
Satisfied, Mio heads to join the Literature Club for real but is stopped by Ritsu once again who is thrilled by the idea of becoming the club's president if she joins it first. Eventually, another girl named Tsumugi shows up who would like to observe the Choir Club. Ritsu pushes her to join the Light Music Club instead but is stopped by Mio who prepares to leave the club once and for all.
On her way, Ritsu yells at her and reminds her at the old promise the two made, forming a band together. However, the short emotional moment is destroyed instantly by Ritsu again who starts to crack jokes about their earnings once they become professionals. The whole scene seems to be so funny for Tsumugi that she decides to join too. With already three members and the line-up of a drummer, a bassist and a keyboardist, Ritsu enthusiastically declares that all they need now is somebody who plays guitar.
