Imagine yourself in the final boss fight of the game. The boss is putting pressure on you—each movement you make must be precise otherwise you’re finished. This is roughly howNew Gate Volume 1 begins. To sum it up in a sentence, the series is an isekai inside of an isekai. But it takes the normal trope and alters it a bit. The story follows an adventurer named Shin who was stuck inside a VR game alongside other players, and defeats the final boss, releasing everyone from the game prison. Sounds familiar, I know, but bear with me here. Before Shin has a chance to log out or even bask in the glory of beating the game, a bright light transports him back into the game, several centuries into the future. Confused by what happened, he checks his menu and learns he can’t contact anyone he used to know and he discovers he has new titles that beef up his stats greatly. Curious about his strange surroundings and his titles, he ventures into the world for answers.
One thing I really liked about this series is how relatable the main character is. I know if I was rethrown into a world I just saved and rewarded with insane stats, I would investigate what happened to me and the world while keeping my stats a secret, which is exactly what Shin does. Another thing that caught my attention was how much of the world had changed since Shin saved the players. In one scene, Shin finds out that the currency he previously used now has a ridiculously higher value than before. I really enjoyed how they illustrated this scene because the over-the-top reactions from the merchant were hilarious and it paired greatly with Shin’s relaxed yet cautious personality.
