Battle Royale (バトル・ロワイアル Batoru Rowaiaru? ), abbreviato in BR o BR act, è un manga seinen tratto dall'omonimo romanzo. È opera di Koushun Takami, l'autore del romanzo, e del mangaka Masayuki Taguchi. È ambientato nell'immaginaria Repubblica della grande Asia, che si trova ipoteticamente al posto del reale Giappone, un regime totalario in conflto con tutti gli stati del mondo e governato da un dtatore chiamato l'Egemone.
Oltre al manga, dal romanzo è stato tratto un film, Battle Royale, con Takeshi Kano, diretto da Kinji Fukasaku, con una storia simile ma una trama abbastanza autonoma.
Esiste anche un seguo del manga, opera di Hiroshi Tomizawa, chiamata Battle Royale II - Blz Royale. Solo lo spunto di fondo è in comune con il sequel del primo film, Battle Royale II: Requiem, diretto da Kinji e Kenta Fukasuku (2003), ma la trama è completamente differente.

Nella Repubblica della Grande Asia, uno stato totalario geograficamente localizzato nel Giappone della realtà, vige il BR act. Secondo tale legge, ogni anno viene scelta trame sorteggio una classe di terza media (o meglio, il suo equivalente nel sistema scolastico giapponese) per partecipare al cosiddetto Programma. Il gioco consiste in una lotta all'ultimo sangue in cui i partecipanti devono uccidersi a vicenda in un luogo scelto apposamente dal governo, precedentemente evacuato. Per costringerli a partecipare, tra i vari espedienti c'è un collare che fornisce al centro di controllo la posizione degli studenti e che esplode in caso di fuga o di ammutinamento. Ai partecipanti è forna un'arma con creri assolutamente casuali (dalle mragliatrici ai coperchi di pentola), in modo da uniformare, affidandole completamente al caso, le possibilà di sopravvivenza. L'obiettivo è che rimanga un solo superste, l'unico che potrà fare rorno a casa.
Il manga ha per protagonisti gli studenti di una delle classi sorteggiate: la classe 3-B dell'istuto Shiroiwa, 21 maschi e 21 femmine. Il loro Programma si svolgerà su un'isola evacuata.
Si delineano subo fra gli studenti due diversi approcci alla suazione: quelli che si rifiutano di partecipare al gioco, e cercano il modo di ribellarsi al governo, e quelli che accettano di combattere. Mentre questi ultimi si muovono in genere da soli, i ribelli formano diversi gruppi ed attuano diverse strategie per porre termine al gioco. L'attacco diretto alla sede del centro di comando e al capo dell'operazione, il professor Yonemi Kamon, progettato dall'hacker e ribelle anti-governativo Shinji Mimura, fallisce drammaticamente, mentre i membri della classe continuano a morire uno dopo l'altro.

Shōgo Kawada, sedicente sopravvissuto alla precedente edizione, affermando di conoscere una via di fuga (che però non vuole rivelare) guadagna la fiducia di Shuya Nanahara: quest'ultimo infatti non intende rinunciare alla speranza di portare fuori da quell'inferno tutti i suoi compagni, e si rifiuta categoricamente di uccidere chicchessia. I due, assieme a Noriko Nakagawa, tentano di convincere anche altri ad unirsi al loro gruppo (fra cui il campione di Kenpō Hiroki Sugimura), ma devono continuamente fare i conti con innumerevoli morti.
Soprattutto il gelido Kazuo Kiriyama, incredibilmente intelligente e fortissimo nel combattimento e nell'uso di ogni genere di armamenti e la bellissima Msuko Soma, si rivelano assolutamente senza pietà, e costuiscono la minaccia più pericolosa presente sull'isola, avendo deciso di stare al gioco e di lottare per sopravvivere.
Il manga (come del resto il romanzo e il film) ha una storia particolarmente violenta, tanto da avere scatenato in Giappone violente polemiche e un interesse nazionale. Proprio a seguo di questo controverso successo, l'autore del romanzo, Koushun Takami, ha deciso con il mangaka Masayuki Taguchi di farne una versione fumettistica.

L'intenzione dell'autore è quella di sublimare in una storia particolarmente scioccante la denuncia verso la logica della società giapponese, a suo dire mortalmente competiva, cui i ragazzi sono costretti fin dalla scuola. Sono presenti anche altri temi: la suazione estrema in cui sono costretti i partecipanti al Programma, per esempio, funge anche da prova del fuoco per le loro relazioni interpersonali.
Molti studenti sono poi la rappresentazione di diversi tipi umani, caratteristica propria molto più del manga, poi persa nel film di Fukasaku (a favore di una caratterizzazione più articolata dei personaggi). Si trovano i caratteri tipici dell'otaku, del ragazzo viziato, del teppista, della ragazza senza scrupoli, del ribelle, del sognatore, dell'introverso, dell'anima gentile, dell'opportunista, e di molti altri, in una sorta di gara mortale fra loro per determinare il più adatto a sopravvivere.Kei, a cynical and arrogant high school student, has minimal regard for others; so it's much to his surprise that when he's asked by his elementary school friend Kato to save a drunken bum laying on the subway tracks, he actually complies. However, no good deed goes unpunished, and they are swiftly decapitated by the oncoming train. In it, the players must face off against aliens in battles where death is inevitable and rewards are minimal. Gantz and Battle Royale have astonishing similarities. In addition to being filled with explicit violence and sex aplenty, each is a stark and horrific survival game in which each person, for the most part, is out for himself. The characters in both manga are out of control and must do the biddings of nefarious forces, and deadly consequences await both success and failure...

Both are very sad, violent and have much stuff involving sex, drugs and killing! Battle Royale has a similar storyline and idea as Gantz but Gantz is still more interesting and A LOT more gory and dramatic! But Battle Royale is a very good manga that can shock you many times!
Both incredibly graphic and gory manga, with the concept of deadly survival games with a lot of killing involved. Whereas Gantz goes for the sci-fi approach, Battle Royale goes for realism.
Both feature average people forced to play a brutal and cruel game for survival. Humanity and the very limits of the human mind are put to the test as to how either plays out when exposed to constant carnage and merciless violence.

There are no censors for the sex, the abuse, the language, or the fatal wounds sustained from battle; everything is laid bare and played up to be as realistic as possible for each manga's particular universe and setting. Tragedies are never-ending, but the main leads keep fighting despite the many losses and setbacks that occur. Everlasting bonds are made while they mature mentally and emotionally to cope with reality. One who has read either will surely be satisfied by the other, guaranteed.
I read both of themand i think both of them are very similar they have alot in common like gore and sad moments and survival game

Doubt and Battle Royale are strikingly similar. Both involve a group of people, with relatively normal lives, suddenly thrust into a deadly and twisted game of survival. The trauma causes the people involved to reveal their true personalities, or even completely lose their minds, to interesting and frightening results.
As both investigate the nature of trust, betrayal, and the need to do what is necessary to survive in a do-or-die situation, if you liked one you will certainly enjoy the other.
Battle Royale and Doubt are ridiculously similar - a group of people are pitted against each other in a messed up 'game' where death is around every corner. Both will keep you turning the page to see what comes next - the only main difference is that BR a huge amount of sexual content.

A group of ordinary teens stuck in a situation where they get killed by people they thought they could trust, causing them to become paranoid of each other? Yeah, that just about sums up both of these series. If you like one, chances are you'll be at least slightly interested in the other. Unless you're squeamish, in which case Battle Royale is NOT your cup of tea.
Hapless individuals are forced to play a deadly game of life and death, dealing not only with the other contestants but themselves as well. Strain, suspense, survival and pressure on the human psyche collide in a thrill fest for the eyes, with trust being a dangerous mistress as ever.
