Das liegt vor allem daran, dass sie die Ursachen und Folgen ihrer ungeheuren Selbstverleugnung so detailliert aufschlüsselt, dass ihre Gefühlswelt auch für ein breites Publikum nachvollziehbar wird. Nagata hat Schwierigkeiten, sich selbst zu verwirklichen, auch die Jobsuche fällt ihr schwer.

Kabi Nagata zeichnet all das mit einfachen schwarzen Strichen, knallpinken Akzenten und einem krachenden Humor, der geradezu befreiend ist. Weil sie trotz ihrer schrecklichen Geschichte nicht dem Selbstmitleid verfällt, sondern ihre absurde Situation immer wieder so überzeichnet, dass es komisch wird. Erfrischender wurde eine verhinderte Coming-out-Geschichte wohl noch nie erzählt.
Genauso lustig und deutlich weniger tragisch kommt Gengoroh Tagames Manga „Der Mann meines Bruders“ (der in der -Bestenliste des diesjährigen ersten Quartals den 1. Platz erhielt) daher. Es geht um den alleinerziehenden Yaichi und seine Tochter Kana. Die beiden bekommen plötzlich Besuch von Mike aus Kanada, dem Ehemann von Yaichis Zwillingsbruder. Denn weil der gestorben ist, möchte sich Mike auf die Spuren seines Mannes begeben. Ärgerlich ist, dass Yaichi seiner Tochter nie von seinem schwulen Bruder erzählt hat.

Yaichi ist dagegen gar nicht begeistert von dem Besuch. Ihm ist nicht wohl, wenn seine Tochter neugierig im Brusthaar des Schwagers wühlt. Allein dieser Körper ist ihm ganz fremd: ein großer, kräftiger und stark behaarter Typ mit Vollbart, der an einen kanadischen Holzfäller erinnert, aber dafür eigentlich viel zu bunte Blümchen-Hemden trägt. Bald wird aber deutlich, dass Yaichi vor allem Schwierigkeiten mit Mikes Homosexualität hat – und dass er sich damit nicht auseinandersetzen möchte.
Yaichi: „Vielleicht kennt Mike eine Seite von Ryoji, die ich nicht kenne. Verdammt! Das wird irgendwie zu konkret. Den Gedanken will ich lieber nicht vertiefen.“
Gengoroh Tagame ist eine Art japanischer Ralf König. Bislang hat er Pornos für die Schwulenszene gezeichnet. Mit „Der Mann meines Bruders“ begeistert er nun ein breites Publikum – weil er Charaktere entwickelt, die schamlos fragen und so einen neuen Zugang auf schwule Lebensweisen ermöglichen. Und weil Gengoroh Tagame deutlich herausarbeitet, wie die eigene Haltung die Wahrnehmung beeinflusst, und was in einem Menschen passiert, der nicht den Gepflogenheiten des Mainstreams folgt. Yaichi zum Beispiel antwortet auf die Frage eines Nachbarn, wer denn Mike sei: „Das ist ein Freund meines Bruders.“

Und das, obwohl er da schon einige Vorbehalte über Bord geworfen hat und anfängt, Mike zu mögen. So wie „Meine lesbische Erfahrung mit Einsamkeit“ wurde auch „Der Mann meines Bruders“ in den USA ausgezeichnet – mit dem renommierten Eisner-Award. Beides zu Recht!
